A Direct Payment is a way you can take control of the money provided by the council to meet your assessed care needs. This direct payment forms Option 1 of Self Directed Support and can be used to either engage a Care Provider or to employ your personal assistant/s.
This regular payment must go into a separate bank account that you set up solely for SDS. You choose how to spend this money to meet the assessed support needs you have instead of using council-provided services such as home or day care.
There are specified rules on how this money can be spent and used for example cash payments are forbidden, accounts must be recorded and submitted to the local authority at agreed intervals. All of the details are within the contract that the local authority enters into with you.
