SDS Forth Valley group pictureForth Valley Independent Living Association (FVILA) and its support service, Self Directed Support Forth Valley, (SDS) is a Charity that exists to provide free help and assistance to individuals and Carers who have a Social Services or NHS based ‘assessed need’ for care and support.

Our History

The Independent living Association Forth Valley started as the Falkirk and District Disability Forum.

The Disability Forum was created in 1996 following the restructuring of local authorities. It was the Falkirk Council part of the old Central Region Disability Forum.  The forum campaigned on issues facing people  with disabilities in the Falkirk area.

In 2000 the forum was approached by Falkirk Council with the view to creating a Support Service, in Falkirk, to help people setup and manage their Direct Payment. Over the following year the forum worked with Falkirk Council to draw up a business plan, job description and funding application to establish the service.

In 2002 the Support Service started up and employed their first member of staff, a co-ordinator, to set up the service, with support from the LCIL, to support people taking up a Direct Payment in Falkirk and to work with the council to promote Direct Payments to service users and council social work teams.

In 2003 both Stirling and Clackmannanshire councils signed up to use the Support Service to help Direct Payment users in their council areas and 2 new Direct Payment Officers where appointed to cover the 3 council areas.

In 2005 the forum changed to a company limited by guarantee and changed its name to Independent Living Association Forum Forth Valley. It is registered as a charity with a board of trustees elected to ensure it was representative and accountable.  We are always on the lookout for new members to join the board.

In 2012 the Association appointed a Development Officer to help develop and grow the services they provide and to help with the introduction of Self Directed Support.

As more people have chosen to manage their own care arrangements with Direct Payments and the more recent developments of Self Directed Support, the Association has grown from its humble beginnings to become a significant local charity.
